A Good Man and a Good Kid

Listen
00:00 / 00:20

I don't think it was a secret, you was like, my favorite person. And a lot of the students, colored students, let's be honest, felt comfortable going to Cliff. But I didn't. I'm so more comfortable with you. And I'm going to be honest, in a relationship of a white man and a black kid. But I didn't look at it like that, I looked at it as a relationship of a good man and a good kid, making a bond.

There is the ethical quality to our relations with our students. Are they respectful. Mutual. Do they contain elements of gratitude and reciprocity? How do our schools build caring cultures by holding everyone “acareable”? Why do academics take precedence over how we relate and communicate with each other?

  • How important is connection with your students?

  • What do you do to foster authentic and respectful relations with and between students

  • When did you ever feel that a teacher did more than each you but actually showed care and concern for you?

  • Discussion: Turn to a partner and than as a foursome, brainstorm the idea of social and emotional intelligence, what that means to you and its impact  in human relations.
